What it’s about: The article covers the topic of detention centers in the U.S. and the impact the detention of undocumented migrants has on the prison industrial complex. This month, prison inmates in states across the U.S. will be protesting against horrible living conditions and low inmate wages. The author mentions one of the reasons for the protests is the treatment of migrants by U.S. immigration authorities.
What’s misleading about it: The title of the article, “The immigration center business generates more than 4 billion dollars” is extremely misleading. The detention of undocumented immigrants, though profitable, is not a $4 billion business—that’s the annual revenue of the entire private prison industry. In the body of the article, the author even states that detention of immigrants contribute to the industry’s revenue, but only make up a fraction of total annual revenue.
