What they’re about about: This pair of articles focuses on statements made by Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, regarding the UN’s Special Committee on Decolonization and its approval of a draft resolution on June 18 that “would call upon the United States to shoulder its responsibility to facilitate the realization of the right of Puerto Ricans to self‑determination.” They also mention a statement recently posted on Twitter by Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rosello, regarding the island-territory’s desire for self-determination in reference to the June 11, 2017 referendum on statehood.
What’s misleading about them: Although the Cuba article matches the statements made by Amb. Rodríguez and accurately reports on the Commission’s resolution, it does little to explain the legal framework that characterizes the U.S.-Puerto Rico relationship and the lack of legislation that would support a short-term path towards statehood for Puerto Rico (nor does it comment on any statements made by other members/petitioners in the Committee).
The article that comments on Governor Rosello’s mention of the June 2017 referendum does not include mention of the massive opposition to the referendum, though it says that only 23% of the electorate participated.
