What it’s about: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro once again spoke out against Colombia, blaming them for the alleged assassination attempt against him. He also alleged that the order to murder him came from the White House. “Han dado la order desde la Casa Blanca de matar a Maduro y le han dado la tarea a la oligarquía bogotana. ¡Ni un pelo me van tocar porque a mí me protege Dios y el pueblo de Venezuela!” (“The order to kill Maduro came from the White House, who ordered the Colombian oligarchy to carry out the attack. They aren’t going to touch a single hair on my head because God and the Venezuelan people protect me!”)
Why it’s false: Maduro’s claims are removed from reality. He does not cite any evidence that members of the U.S. government conspired with their Colombian counterparts to assassinate him. It is still unclear whether the August 4 attacks in Caracas were an assassination attempt, and RT’s assertion that it was only further Maduro’s falsehoods. Similarly, both RT and the Venezuelan government have played up a recent New York Times article that reveals the U.S. discussed coup plans with rebel Venezuelan officers. The article notes that while there was talks of cooperation between the U.S. government and the rebels, nothing emerged from those meetings.
