What it’s about: In this article, Xinhua interviews Patricio Giusto, the executive director at the Argentine political consulting firm Diagnostico Politico. In the interview, Mr. Giusto portrays China as a responsible, committed, and viable economic partner that offers Argentina a solid pathway towards economic development and praises the country’s OBOR initiative.
What’s misleading about it: This interview is misleading because it doesn’t reflect all of Giusto’s commentary on China’s economic relationship with Argentina, in the context of an Argentina that is still largely isolated from global financial markets. The interview effectively promotes China as a country that seeks to build peace and diplomacy without wielding economic influence. Although Patricio Giusto’s comments are focusing on Argentina’s growing relationship with China in diplomatic terms, in a recent post from June 2nd he very clearly outlines how Argentina is currently linked with China via investments in energy and infrastructure and the ties attest to the strategic nature of China’s intervention.
