No es un asunto fácil decir un solo nombre que haya marcado a un país, que como el nuestro está marcado por sucesos y hechos de toda índole. Vivimos en una suerte de carrusel informativo. En particular el 2016, como lo dijimos en un artículo anterior, estuvo definido para millones de venezolanos por la palabra hambre.
Le invito a un ejercicio de política-ficción. Imagine usted que Lorenzo Mendoza, el presidente de Empresas Polar, decide en este 2017 lanzarse a la arena política. Ese hecho solamente, ¿no estaría provocando un cambio de envergadura en el escenario político venezolano?
As the year comes to an end, the demise of social order in Venezuela is the chronicle of a foretold death. Though 2016 began with high expectations of a peaceful change in government, neither the Maduro administration nor the opposition have shown the courage and leadership needed to find common ground and to pull the country out of the deep hole it finds itself in. Unfortunately for Venezuelans, who are deeply suffering from the economic, social and political chaos, they have little to look forward to in 2017.
The historical problem Brazil has been unable to solve is the need to build an inclusive economic model that can help alleviate poverty and reduce inequality. That will require cutting subsidies and benefits to interest groups that have long benefitted from fiscal spending. As the year comes to an end, Brazilians will be happy to forget a bad year in terms of politics and the economy. Unfortunately for them, 2017 might not be much better.

En medio de una crisis política y un conflicto institucional sin precedentes en Venezuela lo que más preocupa al venezolano de a pie es la comida. Una cosa ha terminado estando a atada a la otra. Sin cambios políticos no habrá recuperación económica en Venezuela, y sin ésta no habrá de nuevo acceso a los alimentos.
La actitud de Lagos también es algo populista. Si bien critica el anuncio, no se atreve a hacer un llamado a los legisladores de su partido a actuar responsablemente y oponerse al feriado extra. Un líder responsable demostraría su compromiso con lo que dice pidiendo a los parlamentarios —al menos a los que lo apoyan— que rechacen el proyecto.

Por estos días se está cerrando la celebración de los 100 años de la presencia ininterrumpida de la Compañía de Jesús en Venezuela. Habían sido expulsados de América Latina por Carlos III en 1767 y en el caso de Venezuela volvieron, en aquel momento de forma discreta, en 1916 en los años iniciales de la larga dictadura de Juan Vicente Gómez. De esos 100 años en la vida contemporánea del país, en lo personal he estado vinculado a los jesuitas, como laico e intelectual, por 32 años.
